I'm a Wilder Girl

Emma got a pioneer dress, apron, and bonnet for her birthday. She is in love with all things Little House on the Prairie since reading the books. I have to say that I am too. What a great time we had reading those books and what a great message they had. Anyway I am enjoying Emma's obsession. The other day as we were leaving her friend Aidan's house she gave him a hug and said, "Goodbye Almanzo." She has been wearing braids now to look like Laura, and always a calico dress.

Popsicle Weather

It has been very hot here recently, and this allows Emma to indulge in two of her favorites, one old and one new; popsicles and dresses. We are reading the Little House series, and she has decided she wants to be Mary. Really now, who doesn't? Ahhh...but in reality she is so like Laura it makes me smile while we read. Every morning she selects a new dress from her extensive collection (a very timely gift of used clothes from a parent at Sam's school). She especially likes her "calico" dresses. The other day on the way to the park to meet some friends she said, "Miles can be Almanzo and I'll be Laura. Oh shoot...we need to get a gun."

She brought popsicles out back the other day. I started to share mine with Delaney. It was quickly taken over by the little dictator. It made her instantly happy and then completely miserable. I wish I had a video of it. She grabbed it in both hands and sucked the juice out of it like her life depended on it. Clinging to it the cold began to be a problem, but she wouldn't put it down or let me take it. She cried and cried, and I finally I couldn't stand her misery, so I took it away. No more popsicles for that girl.

Delaney's New Look

This is an almost constant expression. Is this de-evolution?

Hmmm...it takes some getting used to. In other exciting news...she took her first steps yesterday!! I got a little teary.

Emma Funnies...

She comes into the room having removed her clothes and I say to her, "Why are you naked?"

She yells, "I like to be hideous!" "What is hideous?" she says with a smile.

She is eating watermelon which she has been begging me for. She says, "Watermelon makes your bottom puffy. So it won't quite fit in your underwear."

We are talking about how a long time ago people had a noon meal called dinner and an evening meal called supper and how we have lunch and dinner. She is trying to make sense of this. She makes a guess, "Scientist just didn't know what to call it." She gets this from the Brontosaurus/Apatosaurus debacle. I think.

Sam tells Emma that he needs to brush her teeth after she has a turn. She said emphatically, "I wish they hadn't invented grown-ups doing it!"

Griffith Observatory

Isn't he cute??

We visited the Griffith Observatory on Sunday. Emma is interested in the planets, asteroids and meteorites, which she calls meat eaterites. It is an interesting building with all sorts of goodies for the budding astronomer. Emma enjoyed finding her weight on different planets, seeing a movie with Sam about the big bang and all the planets and stars and seeing different actual pieces of space debris.

Easter

We had a great time dyeing Easter eggs with Gramma and Grampa (Dianne and Art). We tried a new method of wrapping uncooked eggs in onion skins and hard boiling them in water. They turned out really nice. Next year we will try some more natural dyes. Both girls were excited about their Easter baskets which included such treats as a bicycle horn (bad idea), Bonnie Bell watermelon chapstick, post it notes, pens, whiffle balls, etc...
